Misty Morning by Mashuto Misty Morning by Mashuto
Canon EOS 6D | EF 24-105 f/4L @ 24mm | 1/4s, 1/40s | f/11 | ISO 100

An image from my WV trip back at the beginning of June. Woke up quite early to head down to Bear Rocks at Dolly Sods to capture the sunrise.

In what appeared to just be my luck that weekend, I was greeted with ok light. Ok, but not great. I was hoping as well for some fog down in the valley, but was again greeted with mostly mist. Not wanting to waste the opportunity, I began to shoot anyways and snapped off a bunch of images and have been rather happy with the results.

Processing on the images from that morning has proven rather difficult though. The color palette offered by this place is very difficult to translate into an image and I have found my images from that morning just looking a bit off in terms of color. I will probably continue to attempt to process a few more of these as I have a bunch with the sun below the clouds illuminating the mist in the valley to a wonderful shade of pink.

In the meantime, please enjoy this image!

The contrast of this image is amazing. The colors really stand out. The vastness of the landscape is what makes this photo absolutely stunning. The way the artist captures so much detail is astounding, the timing is perfect! In this photo, there is a lot to see, mountains, trees, skyline, rocks, mist, etc... The foliage of the trees is one more thing that makes this photo one of my favorites. The angle is just fantastic, you get to see everything! This truly is a quality image. I know the artist did everything in their power to make this photo really stand out. I applaud the artist for that. Great job!

Thanks Jonathan! I actually found myself struggling with this spot as the colors I was picking up were not always what I am super comfortable with, and it made it a bit challenging for me to end up with results I was really happy with.

Well those bright greens of early spring that happen up there are astounding and you captured them very well.

Outstanding composition and exposure!  A few comments though, it almost seems that the photo is a bit too sharp, which I'd prefer more than a not so sharp shot, but the trees in the mid-foreground grab my attention too much due to the sharpness.  Also the colors in the foreground seem a little too saturated.  I'm no naturalist by any means, but it just feels like a little too much right now.

Sorry, I hope I don't sound overly critical. It's just when I see a photo this good, it's the little things that I start to notice.  Great shot mate, keep the good work up!

First off, no need to apologize, it is refreshing to hear an actual genuine critique of the shot. My processing lately has tended to occasionally push the saturation too far, so it is nice to hear that, its super easy to tone it back. Also my web sharpening action was pretty much on autopilot for this shot, but with so much small detail, it definitely seemed to have oversharpened it.

Anyways, I took your suggestions to heart. The trees in the foreground have been desaturated a bit, although possibly not enough, and I have toned back the sharpening in that area as well. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Sorry for getting so long to get back to you!  Thanks for taking the comments into consideration, but please I don't want to feel like I pressured you into making something you didn't want lol.  Either way, keep the good work up, hope to see more from you soon :D

No, no pressure at all. If it was something I had done on purpose as an artistic decision I would have simply stated so and left it as it was. However, I often times worry that I have pushed the saturation too far, and if someone comments on it, I know that I am not alone and can make the changes I need. In this particular case with the sharpening, I just sort of let my web sharpener script do its thing on autopilot and then posted it without really thinking how the web version looked (compared with the full res) and if an element of the sharpening was distracting from the rest of the photo then I am happy to change things. Thank you again for taking the time to actually leave thoughtful critique!
