Description

Had a pretty strong storm roll through the area tonight. Figured it was a great time to break out the camera and test my luck at getting some lightning. I haven't had much luck capturing lightning for various reasons, mainly due to the fact that there is so much stuff around its often difficult to actually see the sky. Oh yea, and the fact that I'm not trying to get struck by lightning. Incidentally about 3 minutes after this shot was taken, lightning struck just down the street and we rushed inside.

Although this was a long exposure, all these actual bolts occured within a second of each other, was kind of crazy.

I know from my own experience that it can be very frustrating when trying to compose shots like this. Lightning is not something that you can just go out and "take a shot of", the weather plays a greater role in this aspect of photography than in almost any other.

There are several points that particularly appealed to me in this capture:

1. I like the way the foreground has been used to give the image a solid depth of field. It is not too dominant and seems to frame and in fact enhance the "show" in the background.

2. The sky is not in the slightest over-exposed. Due to the fact that several clouds are visible it lends a realism to an already great shot.

3. The lightning is perfectly captured. I have nothing but respect for anyone who manages to do that.

4. The color of the sky enhances the image as a whole. It strengthens the impact of the lightning due to the purple hue that seems to exude power in the electrically charged atmosphere.

I love nature and her moods, and this is a fine example of both!
